In Fiesole we recognise the importance of community: our intellectual community, but also the social support networks we need as early career researchers. We are committed to hosting social opportunities and events at the end of each conference day.

In order to reduce the number of platforms we ask attendees to master, social events planned by the conference will take place via Zoom using the breakout rooms feature. Breakout rooms provide spaces where the size of the group present is limited in order to allow for free-flowing conversation. These rooms must be established ahead of time: you will be asked on registration to rank your interests in order that we can allocate a room for you. However, we encourage free flow of participants between break out rooms and will seek to accommodate moves as best we can during social events.

In an effort to cater to different needs and tastes we intend that some breakout rooms offer semi-structured hosted events, while others might be more suited to unstructured conversation, “wine hour” catch ups, and brown bag lunches. Some ideas for what might be available include:

  • Poetry reading

  • Stitch along

  • Hotel bar

  • Trivia

  • Tea and cake (bring your own)

  • Meet ups for attendees of particular cancelled conferences

  • LGBTQIA*+ social

  • Medieval Drama Table-Read

If you would be interested in hosting a social event of any kind, please email james.sargan@utoronto.ca. Nothing is too arcane: we will do our best to facilitate!
