Dr J. D. Sargan is ZKS-Lendrum Assistant Professor in the Scientific Study of Manuscripts and Inscriptions in the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Durham University. He is a specialist in book history and medieval literature. In particular, his work focusses on the literature and manuscript culture of high medieval England. His research interests include histories of reading, writing, and scribal practice; temporality; queer and trans theory, especially in relation to the material form; non-conforming bodies in literature; and developing digital and scientific approaches to manuscripts and early print.

Previously, Dr Sargan was a Leverhulme Trust-funded postdoctoral fellow in the Old Books, New Science Lab at the University of Toronto; lecturer in medieval literature for Magdalen College, University of Oxford; and tutor in English palaeography for the Warburg Institute, University of London. Dr Sargan has acted as a consultant and research associate, and is available for freelance writing and research.
